Coloured Raine by Loraine R. Dowdy was founded in 2013 and aims to encourage diversity and self-
expression. The meaning behind the name of the brand is Coloured as in all aspects of color and
Raine stemming from the owner’s name, Loraine. Coloured Raine is cruelty free and certified by
PETA. Their products are also vegan, paraben free and gluten free. In an industry that is being
overridden by celebrity and beauty blogger make-up lines, we wondered what keeps Coloured Raine
thriving and sought after by make-up enthusiasts.
Kira: What was your first encounter with makeup?
Loraine: My first encounter with makeup was in high school. Since I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup I would apply it when I arrived at school. I would line my lips with a black liner (horrid I know) and slap on some gloss or lipstick. I stole all these items from my older sister and she would get pissed every time. But I didn’t care because in my little head, I was cute…LOL
Kira: What are some of the steps you took to go from your financial job to launch your own business?
Loraine: Corporate finance has taught me how to be detailed oriented and how to properly research. However, I cannot give all credit to corporate because the curious cat in me will always take the time to research whatever interests me. It has also taught me discipline. People tend to think when you work for yourself you can relax and take it easy. It’s the opposite because you are now fully reliant on yourself for income. Thank God for the difficult challenges and the Executives I worked for because they helped groom me to be the business woman I am today.
What advice would you give to budding stylists?
If styling is your passion, don’t give up! Collaborate with others and do test shoots to showcase your work. Assist more established Stylists so that you are able to learn and network. If you need to get another job while you are assisting/interning do that but keep styling in your free time. Always stay abreast of current fashion trends, watch the shows online and subscribe to blogs and magazines. Continuously find a way to create.
“The color of my skin should not be the reason I am overlooked or undervalued. I overcome all hiccups by proving I am capable and more than ”
Kira: As a woman of color, what were/are some of the challenges you face(d) when
launching in the beauty industry and how did you overcome them?
Loraine: As a woman of color, you don’t get the same opportunities as a Caucasian woman. You have to work 100 times harder to get recognized, to be trusted, to be valued or taken seriously. The challenge as a black woman is getting society to see that I am just as good as the next. I’m just as trustworthy and my worth is priceless. The color of my skin should not be the reason I am overlooked or undervalued. I overcome all hiccups by proving I am capable and more than!
Kira: What keeps you motivated to keep creating in a “saturated” industry?
Loraine: What keeps me motivated are my customers. Everyday we are sent messages about how much our hard work, quality of product and customer service valued. It’s a great feeling when you know that your hard efforts aren’t gone unnoticed. Kira: Whose makeup or makeup application have you always admired? Loraine: @aidensempire and @kilprity. I’ve learned so much from them. Kira: What colours are going to be hot for Spring 2019? Loraine: Anything colorful will be hot for spring 2019.
Kira: What are some of the latest makeup trends that you’re excited about?
Loraine: I’m not the type to get excited about trends. I’m always excited to create in general. Kira: If you were stranded on an island what would be your MUST HAVE product(s)? Loraine: Queen of Hearts and Cherry Blossom
Kira: What is your favorite product from Coloured Raine?
Loraine: Safari Raine collection
Kira: What advice would you give to women who want to start a career in the beauty industry? Loraine: Take your time to do proper R&D. Test, test, test and test some more until you are completely satisfied with your formulation. It’s a fast-paced industry and it’s imperative to keep up. However, don’t overwhelm yourself. Go with the flow and create what you believe in. Be yourself and see the beauty in everything you create. Surround yourself with positive energy and quiet out the negativity.
