Coloured Raine

Coloured Raine by Loraine R. Dowdy was founded in 2013 and aims to encourage diversity and self- expression. The meaning behind the name of the brand is Coloured as in all aspects of color and Raine stemming from the owner’s name, Loraine. Coloured Raine is cruelty free and certified by PETA. Their products are also vegan, paraben free and gluten free. In an industry that is being overridden by celebrity and beauty blogger make-up lines, we wondered what keeps Coloured Raine thriving and sought after by make-up enthusiasts.

Kira: What was your first encounter with makeup?
Loraine: My first encounter with makeup was in high school. Since I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup I would apply it when I arrived at school. I would line my lips with a black liner (horrid I know) and slap on some gloss or lipstick. I stole all these items from my older sister and she would get pissed every time. But I didn’t care because in my little head, I was cute…LOL

Kira: What are some of the steps you took to go from your financial job to launch your own business?
Loraine: Corporate finance has taught me how to be detailed oriented and how to properly research. However, I cannot give all credit to corporate because the curious cat in me will always take the time to research whatever interests me. It has also taught me discipline. People tend to think when you work for yourself you can relax and take it easy. It’s the opposite because you are now fully reliant on yourself for income. Thank God for the difficult challenges and the Executives I worked for because they helped groom me to be the business woman I am today.

What advice would you give to budding stylists?
If styling is your passion, don’t give up! Collaborate with others and do test shoots to showcase your work. Assist more established Stylists so that you are able to learn and network. If you need to get another job while you are assisting/interning do that but keep styling in your free time. Always stay abreast of current fashion trends, watch the shows online and subscribe to blogs and magazines. Continuously find a way to create.
